George I. Sanchez School Parents Go Back to Class

Twenty parents of George I. Sanchez School students have signed up for a 3-day workshop on computer basics.

"We are excited to see this response from our parents," said Lucy Pacheco, who works in the school's main office. "I'm going to participate as well, assisting the teacher for the first half of class, and helping parents practice what they've learned during the second hour."

The parents who signed up did so after watching their children rely more and more on computers for school work. While they may not get into the advanced computing that their children will, they will master the basics of standard word processing and email programs, and learn to use the internet.

"With luck, we'll have more parent interest as the year goes on," explained Ms. Pacheco. "We may even offer the classes on a permanent basis as part of the after-school parent involvement program, part of our collaboration with Communities in Schools."

Adults who are not Sanchez parents, or Sanchez parents who already know computing basics, can find additional technology training courses offered by AAMA's adult education program, Adelante. Call 713.926.7661 for information about those courses.

The Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA) currently serves over 30,000 men, women, and children through more than 20 different programs. AAMA's mission is to advance the lives of at-risk youth and families through an array of innovative programs that provide education, social services, healthcare and human services, and community development in Texas cities.

In Houston, AAMA has pioneered critical work with at risk youth through the highly successful and nationally recognized, George I. Sanchez High School (GIS). In 2001, AAMA opened a second GIS campus in San Antonio. GIS is successfully educating 600 students in 2002.

Our adult education program, AAMA Adelante (To move forward), provides classes in ABE (Adult Basic Education), ESL, GED, technology training and citizenship to approximately 3,000 students each year.

With the assistance of public and private funding sources, AAMA's health and human services served 27,992 people in 2001 and is recognized as the largest and most successful provider in Texas for alcohol and drug treatment services.

The most recent U.S. Census indicates that a large share of the nation's economic growth will depend on the millions of Latino children in the U.S. public school system and on the educational employment opportunities that they are given. The economy and labor market of the future will be, for the most part, met by today's Latino students, who will constitute a large share of the nation's workforce. The targeted communities, which AAMA serves, are living in economic and social distress. AAMA is one of the few safety nets for those we serve.

When It Comes to Donations, AAMA Respects Your Rights

The Donor Bill of Rights was created by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the Giving Institute: Leading Consultants to Non-Profits. It has been endorsed by numerous organizations. AAMA is proud to operate its fundraising program according to these guidelines.

The Donor Bill of Rights

Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To ensure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the nonprofit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:

I. To be informed of the organization's mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.

II. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization's governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.

III. To have access to the organization's most recent financial statements.

IV. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.

V. To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.

VI. To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.

George I. Sanchez Charter High School was founded by AAMA in 1973 and became a first-generation Texas Charter School in 1996. GIS has been locally and nationally recognized for its success with at-risk youth and pioneering efforts such as free day care and advanced computer technology programs. George I. Sanchez High School will be posting RFPs for E-Rate Funding Year 2008/2009 on December 17, 2007.

Proposals are due on January 17, 2008 at 2:00 PM. Late proposals will not be accepted
Site surveys are to be scheduled on an individual basis
All correspondence relating to these RFPs are to be submitted to erate@aamainc.us

Due to staff illness we were not able to schedule all requested site surveys to accomodate all vendors. We therefore adjusted the Proposal due date to:

The People Who Founded AAMA In 1969, Houston’s East End was plagued with problems of drug abuse, school dropouts, teen pregnancy and juvenile crime. A small group of students, businessmen and teachers banded together to discuss how they could reduce drug abuse, keep teens in school, provide wholesome recreational opportunities and prepare students to become leaders. As a result of their discussions, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans was formed in 1970. The first board included: Luis Cano Froilan Hernandez Ninfa Laurenzo Roland Laurenzo David Martinez Yolanda Navarro Offering recreation and other programs out of an old house on Sampson Street, AAMA received its first grant of $40,000 to provide youth services in 1971. Now, 38 years later, AAMA’s budget exceeds $15 million and the organization helps more than 23,000 people annually.
